I was really excited about Google+ when I first read about it, as I think it has some really killer features, such as Circles and conference video calling, as you mentioned. But the other main thing is that it's not directly trying to compete with Facebook, nor Twitter. It's more of a few of the best bits of both, and then Google's own completely innovative take on social media. I think that's what will make it successful.
